We look for original analysis and research and do not like simple rehashes of well- worn libertarian positions. TRAVEL AND LEISURE
http://www.travelandleisure.com/contact/index.cfm#ed
Look at several issues of the magazine and become familiar with the types of articles published in the various sections, and the two Regional editions, whose page numbers carry letters that indicate the region—E(East), W (West).
Please note that a place is not an idea, and that editors are looking for a compelling reason to assign an article: a specific angle, news that makes the subject fresh, a writer's enthusiasm for and familiarity with the topic.
Service information is important to every destination article: when to go, how to get there, where to stay, where to eat, what to see and do. The reader must be able to follow in the author's footsteps, and the articles are scheduled withat in mind—ie., before the season in question. We have a three-month lead time.
Please do not telephone us about story proposals. Instead send a query letter that briefly outline the ideas (no more than three at once) being proposed. Please enclose recent clips of your work and a SASE. Query letters can also be via e-mail. The address is tlquery@aexp.com. In most cases, e-mail queries will receive the fastest responses.
It is rare that we will assign a feature article to a writer with whom we have not worked. The best section to start with are departments in the front and back of the magazine and the regional editions.

MS. MAGAZINE
Manuscripts Editor 433 S. Beverly Drive
Beverly Hills, CA 90212
http://www.msmagazine.com/msherstory.asp
Ms. does not accept, acknowledge, or return unsolicited poetry or fiction. Ms. considers only non-fiction manuscripts and queries. In order for non-fiction submissions to be considered, we need the following to be included: *Resume *Previously published clips *A self-addressed, stamped envelope with sufficient postage (if you wish your manuscript to be returned). Submissions should be typewritten, and not longer than 2,000 words. It is strongly encouraged that writers check several recent issues of the magazine, to find if their proposal is suitable to Ms. The most successful submissions are tightly-
focused pieces which contain unique information with a feminist perspective. Generally, we do not cover beauty, fashion, fitness, travel, or food stories. Film and book reviews are usually covered in house. Our rates vary and are not discussed until acceptance of an article for publication. Due to the shortage of staff and the enormous volume of material received, Ms. regrets that we cannot discuss queries or manuscripts over the phone, and cannot be held responsible for manuscripts sent to us. The Ms. staff will try to respond to queries within 12 weeks. Send manuscripts and queries by mail.

PADDLER MAGAZINE
http://paddlermagazine.com/contact/writerguide.shtml
Paddler is published six times a year and is written by and for knowledgeable paddlers. We cover the whole spectrum--
whitewater, flatwater, canoeing, sea kayaking, rafting, sit-
on-tops--if you do it with a paddle in your hand, we're all over it. Our core audience is the intermediate to advanced paddler, yet we strive to cover the entire range from beginners to experts.
Check out a few issues and think about querying for one of the departments first--that's the easiest way to break into the magazine and those are often the stories we are most in need of--particularly the Hotlines department. Being able to include photos with the piece is also a huge plus, as it means one less step for us.
Paddler pays 15 to 25 cents per published word 30 days after publication. Rates are based on the experience of the writer and the amount of work we put into the piece. Letters to the Editor ("Eddylines") are unpaid. Paddler buys First North American Serial Rights and one-time electronic rights. All subsequent rights revert back to the author.

FAMILY FUN
244 Main Street
Northampton, MA 01060
http://family.go.com/Resources/familyfun/guidelines.doc
Our goal is to inspire families to spend time together by providing the sure-fire ideas and activities that will make that time a success. In other words, we take fun seriously. Please note that our heavy emphasis on activities and ideas distinguishes us from other parenting and family magazines (as one of our descriptive slogans points out, we provide "100% activities for 100% fun"). This format means that we are always looking for freelancers who are experts in the art of being a fun-loving, creative parent. We accept submissions by standard mail from published writers. Queries should describe the content, structure, and tone of the proposed article. Since we receive many queries on the same topics, please be as specific as possible about what makes your idea unique and your qualifications to write it.
Features generally run 850 to 3,000 words and pay $1.25 per word upon acceptance. We consider ideas in query form only. Please direct queries to Features, Food, or Travel Editor.
We read both freelance manuscripts and queries for Family Almanac. Pieces are assigned from 100 to 300 words; we pay $1 per word upon acceptance. We also pay $50 to $75 for ideas in the event that we decide to use a staff writer. We consider ideas in query or manuscript form. Please direct submissions to Nicole Blasenak, Assistant Editor.
Family Ties is a first-person column that lets our writers speak parent-to-parent to our readers about the distinctive pleasures, humor, frustrations, and struggles of family life. The topics vary from column to column, but at the heart of each essay is insight into the emotional relationship between the writer and his or her children. Family Ties runs 1,300 words and pays $1,500 upon acceptance. We consider ideas in query or manuscript form. Please direct submissions to Kathy Whittemore, Senior Editor.
We read freelance manuscripts for Family Traveler and pay $100 upon acceptance for 100- to 125-word pieces. We pay $1.25 per word upon acceptance for all Family Traveler articles. We also pay $50 for ideas in the event that we decide to use a staff writer. We consider ideas in query or manuscript form. Please direct submissions to Jodi Butler, Assistant Editor.

MOJO WIRE
http://www.motherjones.com/info/freelancers.html
Mother Jones magazine's award-winning online sister publication, the MoJo Wire, is looking for solidly reported, hard-hitting, ground-breaking news stories. We're also open to thought-provoking, timely opinion and analysis pieces on important current issues.
We're interested in just about anything that will raise our readers' eyebrows, but we focus especially on these areas: criminal justice; environment; corporate wrongdoing; poverty; gay/lesbian; political influence; and international issues.
Our readership is nationwide, so please, no local issues unless they have national interest or implications. At the same time, anything that has already been covered extensively in the major national media will probably not work for us, unless you have some unique, new angle. We will look at cultural stories, but not product, movie or book reviews, nor travel pieces.
Length: 500-2,500 words. Pay: Negotiable according to post-edit length and quality, between $100 for a short news piece or brief commentary to $600 for a top-flight investigative article. Typical fee for an 800 to 1,000-
word news story or column is $250.

THE AMERICAN SCHOLAR
Samantha Reherman
Editorial Assistant
The American Scholar
1785 Massachusetts Avenue, NW 4th Floor
Washington, DC 20036
202-265-3808
scholar@pbk.org
The American Scholar is a quarterly journal published by Phi Beta Kappa for general circulation. Our intent is to have articles by scholars and experts but written in nontechnical language for an intelligent audience. The material that appears in the magazine covers a wide range of subject matter in the arts, sciences, current affairs, history, and literature. We prefer articles between 3,500 and 4,000 words, and we pay up to $500. To be accepted for publication, a manuscript must receive the affirmative votes of the editor and at least two members of the editorial board.
Poems for submission to the Scholar should be typewritten, on one side of the paper, and each sheet of paper should bear the name and address of the author and the name of the poem. We have no special requirements of length, form, or content for original poetry. A look at several recent issues of the Scholar should give a good idea of the kind of poetry we publish and the way poems look on our pages. We suggest, too, that, from the author's point of view, it is probably m
ost effective if not more than three or four poems are submitted at any one time. We pay $50.00 for each accepted poem.
We do not have arrangements for sending sample copies of the Scholar to prospective contributors. It would be possible, of course, for you to purchase the latest issue for the regular price of $6.95. If you do not care to purchase a copy, your library would probably have copies you could see.
All manuscripts should be accompanied by a stamped, self-
addressed envelope so that we can return them to you if we are unable to use them.

FIELD AND STREAM
http://www.fieldandstream.com/fieldstream/faq/
Writers are encouraged to submit queries on article ideas. These should be no more than a page, and should include a summary of the idea, including the angle you will hang the story on, and a sense of what makes this piece different from all others on the same or a similar subject. Many queries are turned down because we have no idea what the writer is getting at. Be sure that your letter is absolutely clear. We've found that if you can't sum up the point of the article in a sentence or two, the article doesn't have a point.
Pieces that depend on writing style, such as humor, mood, and nostalgia or essays often can't be queried and may be submitted in manuscript form. The same is true of short tips. All submissions to FIELD & STREAM are on an on-spec basis. Before submitting anything, however, we encourage you to study, not simply read, the magazine. Many pieces are rejected because they do not fit the tone or style of the magazine, or fail to match the subject of the article with the overall subject matter of FIELD & STREAM. Above all, study the magazine before submitting anything.
FIELD & STREAM does not pay by the word. Payment ranges from $100 to as much as several thousand dollars, depending on the quality of the work, the experience of the author, and the difficulty of obtaining the story.

We publish essays, interviews, fiction, and poetry. We tend to favor personal writing, but we're also looking for thoughtful, well-written essays on political, cultural, and philosophical themes. Please, no journalistic features, academic works, or opinion pieces. Other than that, we're open to just about anything. Surprise us; we often don't know what we'll like until we read it.
We pay up to $1,000 for major essays, $300 to $750 for other essays and interviews, $300 to $500 for fiction, and $50 to $200 for poetry, the amount being determined by length and quality. We may pay less for very short works. We also give contributors a complimentary one-year subscription to The Sun. We're willing to read previously published works, though for reprints we pay only half our usual fee. We discourage simultaneous submissions. We rarely run anything longer than seven thousand words; there's no minimum word length. Don't bother with a query letter, except perhaps on interviews; the subject matter isn't as important to us as what you do with it. We try to respond within six months.

Please query before submitting a story to EXPO -- tell us about your idea and what our readers would learn. Include your qualifications to write about the subject and the sources you plan to contact. Enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope and allow a minimum of four weeks for a response. If you have special qualifications to write one of our planned features or departments, please submit a query letter four months prior to the publication date. Terms of payment are negotiated on a case-by-case basis. We do not pay for unsolicited manuscripts, and there's no kill fee for articles written on spec. For more information on writing fees, contact Danica O'Donnell Vasos, Editor in Chief. Per Writers Market, payment runs around 50 cents/word.

AMERICAN JOURNALISM REVIEW
http://www.ajr.org/ajrgart.asp
American Journalism Review welcomes submissions from outside writers. Please read the magazine to get an idea of what we cover -- namely ethical issues and dilemmas, coverage that falls short, occasional profiles, trends in the industry, etc. Pays $250-2000.
The front-of-the-book section where most freelancers and writers break into the magazine. The pieces are anywhere from 500 to 1,000 words and usually, although not exclusively, are tied to a current event.
Features run from 2,000 to 5,000 words. Query by mail, e-mail or fax, and tell us why you're the person we should assign to do the piece. It's OK to have a viewpoint here, but make sure your query reflects that you don't have an ax to grind.
We have a regular reviewer but do occasionally run outside reviews. If you've written a book, you're welcome to send a copy to the Book Editor for review consideration.
